About Lucy

My name is Lucy Benjamin. I am a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with over 15 years experience working with children and young people aged 2 to 17 years old. I graduated as a Speech & Language Therapist from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh in 2008. I have also since completed a PhD in Speech and Language Therapy Methods at University College London (UCL) in 2021.
I have provided Speech and Language Therapy support within mainstream and specialist nurseries, primary schools and secondary schools. After graduating I moved to England and worked there for 10 years before moving back to Scotland to continue my practice in the Scottish Borders in 2019. In England, I worked for the NHS and then within a specialist school for children with speech and language disorders (Moor House School). Since returning to Scotland I have worked for the NHS in early years and school settings including specialist classes for children with developmental language disorder and speech sound disorders or child apraxia of speech. My experience involves supporting children and young people with the following diagnoses at a specialist level:
- Developmental Language Disorder
- Delayed Language Skills
- Speech Sound Production Difficulties
- Stutter
- Selective Mutism
- Specific Learning Difficulties e.g. dyslexia
All of my previous roles have involved devising and delivering training to parents and professionals. I have experience delivering training on a variety of topics and both in person and via remote platforms.
I aim to provide support to children, families and education settings to help children with speech and/or language difficulties maximise their communication, social and academic potential. When public services across the UK are stretched and children and young people have been impacted by restrictions relating to Covid-19 lockdowns (BBC news article), I believe there is no better time to invest in the support of speech and language development.
I set up SLT Peebles in 2022. Since then, I have supported children aged 2 to 17 from within the Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway and the Lothians. I have also conducted remote therapy sessions for children and families who live further afield. I have provided therapy sessions in nurseries, schools, homes and from my home therapy clinic room. I look forward to meeting more children and families in the second half of the year!
